IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES APRIL 30, 2024 Mrs. BEATTY (for herself and Ms. CASTOR of Florida) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce

National Medical Fellowships (NMF) is proud to endorse House Resolution 1180, introduced by Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH-3) and Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL-14). This resolution underscores the vital importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in medical education.

NMF has been building a diverse health care workforce since the time of Jim Crow, through the Civil Rights Movement, and now amidst the backlash against equity organizations. By supporting this legislation, NMF is unequivocally affirming its mission mandate and activating it through sound policy.

Rep. Beatty emphasized the critical role that doctors of color, particularly Black medical doctors, play in advancing medical science and saving lives globally. Despite their significant contributions, systemic barriers persist, leading to their underrepresentation in the medical profession. DEI programs and practices are essential for increasing their participation in the health care system. She also sounded the alarm about H.R. 7725, the EDUCATE Act, which would restrict federal funding to medical schools that pursue DEI initiatives.

House Resolution 1180 reaffirms the need for a health care workforce that reflects the nation’s diverse patient population to advance health equity across the United States. By supporting DEI programs and maintaining academic freedom at medical education institutions, this resolution champions a more inclusive and equitable health care system.

Joining forces with other esteemed organizations, including the AAMC, NMA, National Hispanic Medical Association, and the American Federation of Teachers, NMF stands committed to supporting this resolution. Together, we strive to ensure that medical education institutions can continue their critical work in nurturing health care professionals dedicated to eliminating health disparities and promoting equitable care so everyone can live long and healthy lives.
