Leadership

Preparing for Strategic Growth and Impact

National Medical Fellowships revamped its services and operations in 2023 to more effectively deliver for the communities it serves.

The core belief that everyone deserves access to quality care and healing grounds the mission of National Medical Fellowships (NMF). Having continued its recruitment of top-tier experts to its team and board of directors, NMF has laid the foundation to activate its mission at the highest level in its 78-year history.

This new leadership has focused on strategic planning, forming new partnerships, engaging new audiences, rebranding the organization, forging alliances to widen the pathway for students seeking health care careers, and upskilling the entire organization. NMF owes a debt of gratitude to former Board Chair Dr. Sandra B. Nichols for her 12 years of service leading the organization at a critical time in its history.

In 2023, NMF was proud to begin partnering with the National Board of Medical Examiners, who established the NBME-NMF Scholarship Fund, providing a $10,000 scholarship to 10 students with demonstrated financial need who are enrolled in an accredited (M.D./D.O.) program in the United States. In alignment with Pillar 6 of NMF’s Strategic Framework, NMF partnered with Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, the philanthropic arm of Horizon Healthcare Services, Inc., to establish the Horizon Behavioral Health Scholarship. This program addresses a critical shortage of psychiatrists and the chronic underrepresentation of psychiatrists of color, an effort that is critically needed considering the rising suicide rates reported by the Centers for Disease Control in 2023 among the American Indian/Alaska Native, Black, and Hispanic communities.

Despite a tumultuous political climate, NMF has focused on raising its profile, building off a comprehensive rebranding effort and a robust speaking schedule by NMF’s president and CEO, board members, and alumni. Among the most notable opportunities included being on the Global Black Economic Forum stage at ESSENCE Fest, joining an illustrious panel at the Milken Institute’s 2023 Global Economic Summit, and hosting a second summer gathering on Martha’s Vineyard that welcomed new supporters to NMF’s cause.

Although already part of NMF’s strategic framework, the organization has doubled down on its commitment to expanding the pathways of chronically marginalized young people to enter the health care workforce. Noting the Supreme Court’s destructive decision on affirmative action and the ongoing assault on all matters pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion, NMF has elevated building student pathways as a key strategy to diversifying medicine.

External entities are increasingly recognizing NMF’s impact. Crain’s New York Business awarded NMF its “Showing the Way” award at its Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion Awards event in June of 2023. Health Career Connection—an organization that empowers undergraduate students, particularly those from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds, to successfully pursue authentic health care and public health careers—recently honored NMF as a longstanding partner in providing internships and learning opportunities to the youth they serve.

Thank you for your commitment to NMF as we work to diversify medicine and transform lives. Please consider how your investment or partnership with NMF can ensure that the pathway to a career in medicine is broadened despite the efforts of forces seeking to narrow it.

Yours in health and justice,

Michellene Davis, Esq.

Mentorship and Engagement

Nearly 3,300 alumni actively participated in NMF’s programs, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to advancing health equity and supporting future generations of diverse health care leaders. Alumni engaged through multiple channels, including didactic sessions, mentorship programs, and speaker series.

  • Mentorship: Distinguished alumni, including Dr. Jerry Abraham, Dr. Melissa Gee, and Dr. Natasha Kyte, generously volunteered their time to serve as mentors once again in NMF’s Primary Care Leadership Program.
  • The Journey Matters: Eighty-eight scholars eagerly signed up to participate in sessions facilitated by esteemed alumni. Dr. Aerial Petty, Dr. Aaron Dotson, Dr. Michael Belmonte, Dr. Denise Asafu-Adjei, Dr. Jamilah Okoe, and Dr. Anya Bazzell shared stories of the profound impact of their tenure as NMF scholars and its impact on their current and future careers. The series provides an opportunity for aspiring physicians to witness firsthand the remarkable outcomes of NMF’s investments in their medical education.
  • Seeding Excellence: Twenty alumni offered to take part in this initiative, which facilitates connections between alumni and current scholars. Dr. Tania Gennell, Caylon Pettis, MPH, and Bryan Redmond spearheaded this effort, highlighting the transformative impact of NMF scholarships and service-learning opportunities.

Training and Empowerment

NMF expanded its reach by offering specialized training programs aimed at empowering alumni to become facilitators and advocates within their communities.

  • Sawubona Healing Circle Facilitator Training: NMF partnered with the Association of Black Psychologists to deliver training for members of the NMF community to learn how to provide culturally grounded crisis response programs. The sessions are virtual safe spaces for individuals of African ancestry coping with anti Black racial trauma/stress and community violence. While not therapy, these sessions constitute supportive and culturally affirming spaces to promote wellness and social- emotional adjustment. There are efforts underway to create similiar safe spaces for the other Black, Indigenous, People of Color communities served by NMF.
  • Leadership and Commitment: The dedication of NMF’s Alumni Alliance and Young Leadership Council (YLC) Executive Committee remained instrumental in advancing our mission and fostering a supportive network for alumni. Led by Dr. Omondi Nyong’o, Dr. Pamela Payne-Foster, and Dr. Stacey Hunt, the Alumni Alliance played a crucial role in strengthening connections among alumni and advancing the collective impact of NMF’s programs. The Alumni Alliance continued to offer insights into the needs of practicing health care leaders, equipping NMF to better serve its alumni. Under the leadership of YLC President Dr. Tania Gennell, along with fellow officers Dr. Aerial Petty, Dr. Joel Burt-Miller, and Dr. Caylon Pettis, MPH, the YLC continued to drive initiatives aimed at empowering emerging leaders in health care.

National Medical Fellowships (NMF) scholarship and service-learning programs profoundly impact communities and the lives of scholars and develop a growing network of health care leaders.

New Scholarship Programs and Innovation

NMF was pleased to be able to launch five new scholarship programs in 2023, expanding the organization’s reach to deliver an additional 70 scholarship opportunities with impactful financial support and connection to the NMF community.

  • NMF partnered with UnitedHealth Group to offer the Future Clinicians Scholarship, a new scholarship program that serves 50 underrepresented health profession students annually. NMF was proud to award these graduate-level students who are studying to be doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, or social workers. Not only did this renewable scholarship financially support students engaging in self-led community service and research, but it also entered them into a thriving network of current and future health equity leaders.
  • NMF collaborated with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey to establish the Horizon Behavioral Health Scholarship. Awarded to four outstanding first-year psychiatry residents in New Jersey, the program provides each student with four annually recurring $10,000 awards during their residencies. This new scholarship is aligned with NMF’s strategic pillar Expand Focus on Behavioral Health and Wellbeing. Notably, it serves as a replicable and scalable model to develop a new generation of diverse health care leaders prepared to reimagine behavioral health care.
  • With funding and collaboration from the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), NMF launched the NBME/NMF Scholarship Fund. NMF awarded this renewable $10,000 scholarship to 10 medical students. This scholarship addressed financial need and attracted the interest of over 400 applicants.
  • Thanks to the generous support of Aya Locums, NMF awarded five scholars the Aya Locums Future Leaders in Medicine Scholarship in its inaugural year. Two M.D. students, a D.O. student, a P.A. student, and a graduate-level nursing student each received $10,000 because of their demonstrated financial need and commitment to health equity.
  • The Merrill family, in honor of Dr. William Merrill, partnered with NMF to establish the Dr. William Merrill Scholarship. This opportunity awarded $7,500 to an underrepresented medical student who has an interest in health care issues that impact rural populations and is attending either a public or historically Black college or university medical school.

Enhanced marketing — including exhibiting and/or advertising at the Student National Medical Association, the National Medical Association, and The Latino Medical Student Association — coupled with rising student financial need, contributed to a marked increase in applications in 2023. In response, NMF developed an innovative new way of applying for NMF scholarship opportunities. Applications now open in four cycles throughout the year, easing the burden on applicants. When a scholar applies during a cycle, the NMF team now automatically reviews their application for all scholarships in the cycle.

Deeper Engagement through NMF Service-Learning Programs

Service-learning programs offer financial support and the added benefits of contributing new research and serving communities across the country. NMF programs support scholar engagement with community and federally qualified health centers, universities, public schools, food banks, and other direct-service providers. These are meaningful opportunities to conduct original research that addresses various health disparities within these institutions’ communities.

Scholarly research can also open the door to professional conferences. For example, scholars participating in the Health Equity Leader Program, established thanks to the generosity of the Brave of Heart Fund, attended the American Public Health Association annual conference, and FARE scholars attended the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology to broaden their knowledge and interest in the specialty. While there, scholars participated in poster sessions to share their research projects and expanded their professional networks.

In 2023, NMF served 134 scholars, resulting in 94 community site interactions nationwide through the following signature programs:

The expansion of scholarship opportunities, innovative partnerships, and enhanced engagement through service-learning initiatives have not only provided financial support to deserving students but have also fostered a growing network of diverse health care leaders committed to addressing health disparities and promoting equity in health care.

Diversity in Clinical Research

Initiative trains diverse investigators to ensure clinical research delivers better outcomes for all.

NMF Dctr is a program designed for emerging investigators (EIs) from chronically underrepresented backgrounds in the medical field. This collaborative effort by sponsoring organizations – Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, Merck, AbbVie, AstraZeneca, and Genentech –provides access to training, certification, resources, mentorship, and support networks essential for their professional development and success in clinical research.

The program aims to enhance the diversity of research leadership and participation by actively recruiting and involving medical professionals from demographics underrepresented in medicine, amplifying their voices and working to address well-earned historical mistrust among marginalized groups regarding clinical research. NMF Dctr is a critical intervention, as diverse clinical trial participants are crucial for ensuring the efficacy of medication, preventative regimens, and therapeutics across all populations.

“This program is a high-level, immersive program aimed at training physicians to become principal investigators. The program was invaluable and is sustainable, in that it did not end with just a certificate. It continues to offer mentorship, follow-up routine Zoom meetings, and a wealth of information to further my growth and development as an expert primary investigator.” – Dr. Belinda Savage-Edwards

Emerging Investigators Trained since 2021

Through the most recent enhancements in its post-training support, NMF Dctr continues to bridge and fortify the gap between training and practice for EIs. 2023 was a pivotal year, as NMF Dctr introduced its Summer Accelerated EI Program for previous cohort enrollees to finish the program and earn their certification. This new model is self-paced with pre-recorded sessions and has proven to be an effective innovation that increased program completion by 33%. The program also launched the UpSquad app to support program engagement, communication, mentorship, and networking. NMF Dctr EIs additionally enjoyed a new post-training support series that covered topics like mental self-care and being a physician leader. The introduction of Zoom office hours (Wednesdays, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET) with NMF staff ensured that EIs could get prompt answers to their questions and be connected to vital resources.

Behind the scenes, the program conducted a market research survey, a quiet yet crucial endeavor to ensure that its offerings evolve to be ever more finely attuned to the needs of its participants.

Amidst these milestones, there were victories aplenty. Dr. Belinda Savage-Edwards, an Alabama-based neurologist specializing in headaches and neuromuscular disease, has emerged as just one of the program’s many beacons of success. Empowered by what she has learned from NMF Dctr, she now has many adult and pediatric clinical trials to her name.

Shifting the Narrative

A rebrand tells a new story about a 78-year-old organization.

2023 was a transformative year for National Medical Fellowships (NMF) in the communications space. A comprehensive rebrand introduced a new logo, transformed the organization’s visual identity with new colors and graphics, shared a compelling short promotional video, and developed tight brand messaging to better convey NMF’s “why” to reach new audiences.

At the same time, NMF undertook a concerted effort to celebrate the change agents in its community. By writing profiles of NMF scholars and alumni, the organization used its platform to amplify their voices and shine a light on the tremendous work they are doing in their communities.

The organization had a lot of great news to share. It published press releases about partnerships with United Health Foundation, the National Board of Medical Examiners, Aya Locums, and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. Essence, Yahoo! Finance, the Associated Press, and MarketWatch were among the outlets that picked up NMF news releases.

NMF’s social media presence and influence continued to grow in 2023 as the organization implemented a comprehensive social media strategy.

Further, NMF social media efforts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn resulted in more than 632,000 impressions, as people resonated more with NMF content. NMF’s social channels earned over 17,000 engagements as people liked, commented, shared, and clicked on NMF posts and stories.

The organization also launched its flagship monthly newsletter, Inside NMF, to reach all constituencies. Since launching in June, readers have opened newsletter issues more than 46,000 times in 2023. Moreover, with NMF open rates averaging 42.72% and clickthrough rates averaging 2.95%, NMF emails are performing well above the nonprofit industry standards of 26.66% and 2.70%, respectively.

An Orange and Yellow bar graph showing that NMF's email open rates and clickthrough rates out perform the nonprofit industry average.

NMF’s new logo draws inspiration from the North Star — a symbol that carries significant importance in many of the cultures that NMF serves.

From enslaved people and Underground Railroad “workers” — who used symbols on quilts to help secretly guide people to freedom to the Hopi and Navajo people who see the eight-point star as a sign of hope and guidance — the North Star has always been a beacon of light, hope, freedom, and finding one’s way for the Black, Indigenous, Latine, and People of Color communities.

NMF’s work to open the doors of medical education for students of color, provide career-transforming opportunities that help diversify clinical research, and deliver programs to ensure medical students and physicians thrive represents NMF’s North Star. This commitment is grounded in the belief that everyone deserves the care they need to survive, thrive, and live long, fulfilling lives.

Raising Possibility

Reactivating a community to advance NMF’s mission

In 2023, National Medical Fellowships (NMF) embarked on a transformative journey, reinvigorating connections with alumni and donors while strategically planning for an expansion of its team and hosting a landmark event on Martha's Vineyard.

Central to NMF’s efforts was the intentional reconnection with our esteemed alumni, donors, and funding partners. Through personalized outreach, engaging events, and targeted communication campaigns, NMF sought to foster a sense of belonging and pride among its community. By emphasizing the invaluable contributions of alumni in fundraising appeals and having thoughtful conversations, the organization has both renewed support from many prior  contributors and acquired new funding partners.

Simultaneously, NMF lifted up its dedicated donors, recognizing their vital role in fueling our mission-driven initiatives. Through transparent communication, stewardship initiatives, and collaborative partnerships, NMF reinforced the significance of their philanthropic investments and demonstrated the tangible outcomes of their generosity. This work seeded opportunities for deeper and more impactful collaboration.

Board members Dr. Calvin Wheeler, Rakia Reynolds, Michellene Davis, Esq. and, Kweku Awotwi at NMF's 2023 Martha's Vineyard event.

A true highlight was the hosting of a prestigious event in August during Black Philanthropy Month on Martha's Vineyard at the Black Joy House. The networking event and reception, which was helmed by a prestigious host committee, brought new supporters to the NMF cause, and uplifted the shared commitment of those gathered to health equity and innovation.

As NMF continues to grow, the board and management work collaboratively to fuel the organization’s mission. The Board Development Committee, co-chaired by Kweku Awotwi and Rakia Reynolds, and the Board Finance Committee, chaired by the Hon. Jon S. Corzine, , led the initiative to embark on a comprehensive scaling initiative to enhance its organizational capacity and amplify its impact. With the hire of top industry talent in Vice President of Advancement John K. White, Jr., M.B.A., and Executive Director of Development Derrick T. Smith, NMF has laid the groundwork for an ambitious advancement agenda. By leveraging innovative fundraising strategies, streamlining operational processes, and cultivating strategic partnerships, NMF has positioned itself for sustainable growth and long-term success for years to come.

In Memoriam

It is with deep appreciation that National Medical Fellowships (NMF) honors the exceptional legacy of a dedicated leader.

Photo of Dr. Art Kaemmer wearing a black jacket, white shirt, and multicolored tie.

Dr. Art Kaemmer

In the realms of philanthropy and medicine, some figures’ impact resonates far beyond their years. Dr. Art Kaemmer, a venerable force in both domains, passed away in January of 2024 at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his pediatric patients and medical education.

Dr. Kaemmer's journey was marked by a deep-rooted commitment to the betterment of others. His tenure as an NMF board member for more than 30 years, serving as chair for over a decade, and as a longstanding leadership donor epitomized this commitment.

Through his steadfast philanthropic support of NMF and other organizations, Dr. Kaemmer helped pave the path for diverse medical students, breaking down barriers and opening doors to a brighter future. His gift of time and treasure to NMF was remarkable. A donor for more than 30 years, he invested over $261,000 in the organization’s programs. As a final act of generosity, Dr. Kaemmer’s estate provided a generous gift to NMF to expand its impact and sustain the organization through endowment.
