PCLP scholars are required to relocate to their assigned cities for the full 6 weeks of the program. Use the menus below to learn about past stakeholders in each region and additional tips for securing housing and transportation.

PCLP scholars placed in Los Angeles, CA conducted service-learning projects focused on a wide range of capacity-building issues facing community health centers (CHCs) including street medicine, social determinants of health, and more. Below are site partners we have worked with in Los Angeles, CA:

While PCLP does not coordinate housing or transportation for scholars, we do try to facilitate and encourage communication between them to find local resources together. Read below to find out more about housing and transportation options.

Housing
Downtown Los Angeles is, on average, a 12-minute drive from our site partners. When searching for housing, keep in mind that you will have to commute to your site clinic as well as other community sites for in-person program events. Scholars should think about access to the Internet, transportation, etc. Below, we have provided a starting point for your housing search. Some of these resources have been helpful for previous PCLP scholars:
- Craigslist – Go to the Los Angeles metro page and choose a neighborhood at the top of the page to narrow your search. Search within “housing” or “sublets/temporary” to find temporary housing.
- Rotating Room – Subletting site for fourth year medical students doing fourth-year-away rotations:
- USC Summer Housing – You may be eligible to apply for the University of Southern California’s summer housing. Availability may be limited.
- AirBnB options – Search for Los Angeles, CA and select the dates you would need based on your time block.
Transportation
Keep in mind that having a car is the best means of transportation and will allow you travel flexibility and convenience. However, if it’s impossible to have a car during your service-learning experience, there are limited public transportation options in the Los Angeles area.
- The LA Metro is the major operator of bus and rail services in Los Angeles County. One scholar noted that the Metro’s Blue Line train stops right in front of Watts Healthcare Corporation. Check here for further timetables and maps.
- All fares can be pre-paid by loading a pass or Stored Valued (cash) on a TAP card and then tapping your card each time you board public transportation. On buses, it is also possible to pay for a single ride with a token or exact change. TAP fares can be found here.

Scholars should think about access to the Internet, transportation, etc. Below, we have provided a starting point for your housing search that has been helpful for previous PCLP scholars.
- Craigslist – Go to the Boston metro page and search within “housing” or “sublets/temporary,” and then click on the tabs at the top for specific cities.
- Rotating Room – Subletting site for fourth year medical students doing fourth-year-away rotations.
- AirBnB – Search for Boston, MA or Lynn, MA and select the dates you would need based on your time block.

Transportation
Keep in mind that having a car is the best means of transportation and will allow you travel flexibility and convenience. However, if it is not possible to have a car during your service-learning experience, there are public transportation options in the Boston area.
- Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority – Can search routes on the website or on Google Maps. Lynn Community Health Center is located near the Union Street stop.
- A Monthly LinkPass can be bought that allows for unlimited rides on the subway and bus routes per calendar month.

The headquarters of Howard Brown Health is about seven miles, or about a 20 minute drive, from downtown Chicago. The headquarters of Near North Health Service Corporation is about two and a half miles, or a 15 minute drive, from downtown Chicago. - Chicago Transit Authority – Can search routes on the website or on Google Maps. Heartland Health Centers is near the LaSalle & Madison bus stop. Howard Brown Health is near the Sheridan stop on the Red Line. Near North Health Service Corporation is near the Clark/Division stop on the Red Line.
- A 30-Day Pass can be bought that allows for unlimited rides on the rail systems and bus routes per month.

Downtown Houston is about a 10- to 20-minute drive away from our Houston site partners. Site partners have advised students to look outside of Loop 610 for housing. This is due to the expensive neighborhoods within the Loop. When searching for housing, keep in mind that you will have to commute to your assigned partner site along in addition to other community sites, and should think about access to internet, transportation, etc. Below, we have provided a starting point for your housing search that have been helpful for previous PCLP scholars.

Transportation
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a rapid transit system serving Oakland and the entire Bay Area. BART operates on elevated tracks and as a subway throughout Oakland.
BART offers the “A” Fast Pass, which is used throughout a calendar month and gives unlimited access to rapid transit around the Bay Area. For more information, please visit BART.
PCLP 2024 FAQs
How are accepted scholars matched with a CHC?
Factors include applicant preference, academic interest, local services (i.e. childcare), and availability during the program period.
What are my weekly hours for PCLP?
Most PCLP site partners operate on a business schedule, i.e. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays, but this may vary by site.
What is my day-to-day going to be like on site?
This varies among PCLP sites, but we provide peer mentors from past PCLP scholar cohorts to help describe each experience.
May I miss a few days of the program?
No. PCLP spans only six weeks, and scholars may not miss time on site.
What are the program dates for PCLP in 2023?
PCLP will only be implemented in Los Angeles, CA for the 2024 year. Below are the program dates.
