NMF/Becton Dickson Primary Care Leadership Program
In order to increase access to primary care for the underserved, the GE Foundation and National Medical Fellowships founded the Primary Care Leadership Program (PCLP) in 2012. PCLP provides future healthcare professionals with an opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of primary care practice in community health centers (CHCs) across the U.S.
Becton Dickinson (BD) is supporting one scholar during the 2022 spring semester in the Virginia, or Washington, DC area, to experience the challenges and rewards of primary care practice in a free and charitable clinic located in Washington, DC. Preference will be given to applicants who are conversationally fluent in Spanish. This program is open to graduate-level nursing and physician assistant students, and medical students in the DC or VA area who are poised to become leaders in primary care.
During the spring semester, one BD PCLP scholar will actively engage with a free and charitable clinic in leadership training, team-based project activities, and healthcare service delivery. 2022 programming will be site partner-specific and generalized to primary care in free and charitable clinic settings.
Application Timeline
The BD PCLP application period was open November 8, 2021 and close December 12, 2021.
Program Eligibility
BD PCLP Scholar candidates must meet the following eligibility:
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) approval letter
- Currently enrolled in an accredited medical school or graduate-level nursing or physician assistant program located in the DC/VA area
- Identification as a student underrepresented in medicine* and/or socioeconomically disadvantaged student
- Demonstrated leadership early in career
- Commitment to serving medically underserved communities
The Free and Charitable Clinic also expects scholar to:
- Be proficient in Spanish (ideally in medical settings)
- Provide proof of COVID-19 Vaccination
- Have a negative Tuberculosis screen in the past year
- Started the Adult Hep B series or sign their waiver
*NMF designates the following racial/ethnic groups as underrepresented student in healthcare: African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian American (Vietnamese and Cambodian only), Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.

Scholar will complete their program requirements during 2022 Spring Semester during which they will spend time on-site. Program requirements include:
- Program orientation;
- 200 project hours;
- Leadership Training including:
- one-on-one interactions with site leadership;
- attendance at management and other staff meetings;
- site leadership interviews;
- PCLP project, including a project proposal, report, and poster presentation;
- Clinical experience
- Program assessment
